It is not known what happened to Jacob, but his wife, Anna,
his son Henry,
and daughter Elizabeth turn up in the Spottswood's Germanna
Colony in Virginia in or about 1725. Jacob's wife Anna was the daughter
of Second Germanna colonist Henry Snyder. Jacob's daughter Elizabeth
married Christopher Tanner. Jacob's great-granddaughter
Mary (Polly) Aylor married Pastor William Carpenter Jr., who was pastor
at Hebron Lutheran Church in Madison Co., VA, and later at Hopeful Lutheran
Church in Boone County, Kentucky.
In 1810, several Aylor's left
their Virginia home and took the overland route through the
Cumberland Gap along the
Wilderness Road to
Northern Kentucky.
Their story, along with that of the Second Germanna Colony, is a
fascinating study in
early American history.
For more information on the subject of Germanna, you can write
to The
Germanna Foundation, PO Box 693, Culpeper, VA 22701, or see their
website. Also check out some of my other Germanna links below.
I am still working on my book. The working title is The Aylor Family of Boone County, Kentucky.
Its been in the research phase for almost 20 years and is just now showing signs
of getting close. I figure at this rate I may have it done before
I retire. :-) I plan to focus on descendants of those
Aylors who moved to Boone County, Kentucky in the early 1800's, but I
will also include some of the early Virginia Aylors and some lines back into Germany.
When it gets to the stage where its almost ready, I'll make
a big deal about it on this web site and the various genealogy mailing lists I subscribe to.
I have been trying to connect the mysterious
Anthony Aylor of Rockingham County,
Virginia to the Germanna Aylors.
Some of his descendants settled in Georgia, Arkansas, Nebraska, Iowa, and Texas.
I have new info on this family, including their origins in Germany.
Turns out they are NOT connected to the Germanna Aylors.
The Mysterious Anthony Aylor is Mysterious No More
Now, I have an even more baffling mystery! See if you can help me
connect Frederick Aylor of Augusta Co. VA to
Anthony or Germanna!
Yet another
Henry Aylor
has surfaced, this time in New York...
Another Henry Aylor, this time of Rockingham Co VA. His descendants are
having a reunion this summer.
Other Related Families
Some Germanna listers were asking about the family of Mordecai Vaughan of Culpeper Co, VA.
Here is a short tree. (Note: this tree was made by converting my GEDCOM file to Treepad using GED2TPD, then using Treepad to Export it to the Web.)
You can join the AYLOR Family Discussion List by sending an
e-mail message to
AYLOR-L-request@rootsweb.com with the text SUBSCRIBE in the body of
the message. You will receive directions from there via email.
Do not include any other keywords or signatures, etc.
The AYLOR-L list is very low volume, so if you sign up, you won't be bombarded
with a bunch of email. I took over as ListOwner back in November of 1998.
I'd like to see some more interest, but let's face it, Aylor isn't that common of a name!
Here is some additional info about this list: Aylor
List Info
As far as software, I use an old DOS-based program called "The Family Edge Plus"
written by Carl York. I have been unable to find any web sites that sell this program,
and based on the fact that it is DOS, I assume it is no longer available.
Which is a shame, really, because it is a fanatastic tool, extremely
fast, intuitive, and easy to use. It has tons of keystroke-saving
shortcuts built in.
Another program I like, more for printing data than for entering it, was
once called GED*Mate, aka Corel Family Publisher. Nowadays, I hear it
goes by the name of Family Tree Creator. I have the original GED*Mate
(by Progeny Software in Canada). It prints fantastic reports and even
an automatically-indexed book right from your GEDCOM file. I can't
find a good link to it on the web.
